CCK Family Camp

As usual my entire family is heading down to KL for the annual family church camp. We'll be at the Glenmarie USJ in KL this year, apparently right across the street from my uncle's place. Cool! =D

Will be gone from 17-20th June. And when I get back, will be heading to NUH for further follow up to have a certain growth removed. Sigh. I've delayed enough, time to have it done.

What I've been up to

Been MIA for a while due to a very bad episode of gout. For the past two months or so, I've been hobbling on my new pair of crutches or walking with a limp when the swelling, fever and pain goes down. From the remarks of people who've seen me since, I've also lost a ton of weight. That's nice (the weight lost, not the comment) but as I've pointed out, not exactly the easiest way to do so!

I've actually been cooking some, organizing my room (yes been 3 months and tho it's shaping up, I still have a pile of junk smack in middle of the room I've been putting off organizing). For frens who have been out of touch or haven't walked into the former book cave, its now a brighter, PINKER and more (and here's the word again) organized place to sleep, eat and breathe in.

Only one problem now. Since the new maid came and my mom decided to spring clean the fridge (number 2), there's been a bad smell wafting around that area...
It smells like milk gone bad, blue cheese or something of the sort. Looks like we'll have to call the fridge repair man to come and find out what's wrong. The smells been around for almost a week and I believe the next time I ever come across blue cheese I'll be running like the wind.

What's Been Cookin'! (March)

These are the best muffins I've ever made or even tasted. Unlike commercially made ones, these muffins are moist, chocolatey and just totally scrumptious! Definitely for those who love chocolate! You'll never know it's been made with cocoa powder.
Here's the recipe: Black Bottom Muffins.
I made some mods to it, first by reducing the amount of water (esp if you live in the tropics) and also using melted butter instead of vege oil for a richier taste. Try it out and tell me what you think! =D

Creations for the past month (March)

Some of the things I've been up up to. Test driving a new picture layout as well! Will be putting up the recipes section to this blog really soon (hopefully before the end of April. >_<)
I've been taking lots of pics with my handphone cam but I've been a little lazy on the uploading and updating of the blog thing LOL! So expect more pics soon. =D

Goodbye My Friend

I've been down with a gouty and arthritic knee inflammation that's made it hard for me to help around the house now that the maid is gone, the new one isn't here yet, and the fact that my sis and I decided we had to revamp (more like spring clean and chuck my precious books!) my room, which she shares with me and the nephie.

We knocked out a useless shelving and study area, got our Ikea cupboards and finally got the room painted. Actually, my sis did most of that (the painting not the knocking out, that was a contractor). It's now a pink marvel that my neice says she'll visit often since it's her fav colour. (She sleeps in my mom's room about 3 m away...go figure).

During the 3rd week of my re-inflamed knee, I got an sms about a college friend who had been admitted to ICU. The next day, another sms informed me of his wake. I was in a lot of pain and pretty much housebound so I couldn't make it, for his wake or his funeral. But I prayed for his soul and hoped the drunk driver that hit him gets what he deserves. (Too bad there's no life sentences for people like these - irresponsible beh is one thing, irresponsible that costs lives is another.)

Goodbye my friend. We haven't been in touch since graduating from college, but I still remember the times we had then. God bless you and hold you and keep you. Amen.

Old Pontian Cafe

I was hanging around CCK Lot 1 the other day after tuition and decided to have dinner out since I would be starving by the time I arrived home. That's when I came across a new stall in the Lot 1 shopping mall that served Pontian style wanton noodles.

Now this is not the first time I've come across the so-called Pontian wanton noodles and the one across the road from my house is so-so, at best in taste. The noodles aren't bad but the wantons are little more than a token smear of filling (more like a dab) and a whole lot of empty wanton skin.

This Pontian Cafe outlet (I saw one at Bt. Panjang as well) served portions of noodles in small ($3.30) and large ($3.80). I ordered the large with chilli and was pleasantly surprised by the noodles and the wantons both. A hefty amount of noodles were given with a few slices of char siew and a couple of fried wantons. This came with a bowl of soup (too much msg in this) with some boiled wantons as well. The noodles had a wonderful chewy texture, were cooked al dente (as the Italians love to say) and although it was a large bowl of noodles, I finished it all! The wantons had just enough filling, not over or under-filled.There could have been more char siew and I wouldn't have minded a little more wantons, but overall, the noodles were good and I only paid $3.50(think the other price is for take away).

The cafe also serves other types of noodles, but its only my first visit. Maybe next time I will try the other dishes and get back to you on those. >_< (And no, they are not paying me to advertise for them. LOL.)

P.S: In my hurry to eat up the noodles, I didn't take a pic. Will do so next time I go there. And yes, there will be a next time, I really like the noodles =D.

My New Phone

Yea!!! I finally got my new handphone =D!!! Its a metal rose W995 Sony Ericcson phone with an 8.1 MP cam and walkman features. I was actually planning on getting the Samsung Pixon with the 8 MP cam, but its touch screen and besides, the W995 didn't cost me a single CENT! BEAMS BEAMS BEAMS!!

Can't wait to take those CNY pics with it heheheh.

Bumper Update (Pre-CNY)

I'll be heading down to Malaysia during the Chinese New Year long weekend and will hopefully have something to add to this blog post CNY! (haha =P)

For the moment, I have been really free since my tuition load is LOW! WAh!!! If your kid needs a tutor, call me (LOL)! So to use that free time constructively, I have been experimenting with recipes I have never tried (LAME isn't it >_<, and I am such a food lover too!)

Wierd Cherry Tomato from my MOM's garden (her friend's tomato plant)

Just wanted to show how cute and unusual some plants grow up to be kekekek. This gourd shape little darling is somewhere around the house. Going to become my afternoon snack! SLURP!!

Lamb Stew ala Indian/Morrocan Style

I was trying out this recipe in a book by Chefs John Burton Race and Angela Hartnett 'Cooking for Beginners'. Modified it to add Indian spices from the local spice shop as well as some locally made yogurt. I actually added the whole packet of spice mix! But it turned out great anyway (LOL), altho the kids refused to eat it. They found the spices too strong!

Jamie's Minestrone Soup (from Allrecipes.com)

The kids may not have liked the spicy Morrocan/Indian Lamb stew but they certainly loved this minestrone soup! Sourced from Allrecipes.com (my fav place for recipes), this is one of the best minestrone soup I have ever tasted (or made =D). I used alphabet pasta to make it fun for the kids and used only one pulse (kidney beans), but this was still great! More yummy food will be coming up!

Hoohoo 2 consecutive posts in 2 days

I've been attempting to take food photos after reading and drooling over the fab pics in Smitten Kitchen And here are a couple of really amatuer results. For those who have seen some of non-food pics, you can tell I have totally NO talent in this area!! SOB!!

A little after dinner snack I made using my own salsa recipe. Very simple and tasty, but not for those who can't take a 4 alarm spice level.

Alice's Quik and Ez Jalapeno Salsa
1 large or 2 medium red onions - finely chopped
1 4oz can of diced Jalapeno
4-5 tomatoes (preferably slightly on the unripened side) - finely diced
1 large lime (the Kalamansi ones are fragrant) - juiced
salt to taste

Just toss everything together and mix well. Chill in the fridge and serve up with corn chips. Great topped on a little sour cream as well.
P.S: You can add finely chopped parsley for a little more kick.

What you see above that looks like little boulders sitting in an alien landscape are the rounds of oreo/cream cheese mix that I prepared, all ready to meet the love of their life, chocolate! (Which they get to do tomorrow morning, heh!)

Another pic from a different perspective. My sister said these looked as if they have been coated in a fine layer of icing sugar (that's the reflection from the foil!) The recipe is from Skip to My Lou. It's simple and great and everyone who ate these little nuggets can't believe how easy it is to make!!!

2009 - Things from the Past Year

These were a bunch of monster dolls I made using a free pattern from Revoluz3za. They were really easy and great as X'mas gifts!! Part of my DIY holiday gifts! =D

This next pic is a collection of brooches using round beads that my friend, Karen, requested I help her to make! Might post a tutorial on this in the future! Hahaha all depends on whether I have the time! =P

These are a pair of earrings I made for a friend's birthday! Was trying for some design that looked more unusual, but I'm not sure how well that went! >_<

Last but not least, these are the wierd looking donut shaped eggplant from my mom's garden! They were so strange I had to take a pic of them. hahahahah
